To put it plainly, we are saving the world!
Well, not really but we are doing our part, Here is example of an incremental change we have done to support climate change.
We all know the drill—turn off the TV when you're not watching it, but what about those sneaky devices that sip power even when they're off? Yup, I’m talking about standby power. Many devices like your coffee maker, TV, or phone charger are still pulling electricity even when not in use. By using smart plugs we stop that wasted energy in its tracks.
So, where ties in the link to reducing climate change?
To understand we have to dive in to how electricity is actually made.
In the UK, natural gas is a major source of electricity generation so we will use this as the prime example, Gas is burned with air resulting in high pressure hot gasses. These hot gasses are directed through a turbine, which spins the blades super-fast and drives a generator. This converts the energy from the spinning turbine into electricity.
A waste product of this process is carbon dioxide, which significantly contributes to the greenhouse gasses in our atmosphere.
Let’s escape the classroom and tell you how we have reduced our impact. By using P110 smart plugs from Tapo we are not only able to schedule when to turn off and, on our power, but we are also able to see energy usage across a period of time which we can then use to calculate how much we would save over an average year. By turning off our plugs from 19:00 – 06:00 on weekdays and completely off on weekends we are predicted to save up to 300 kWh a year!
Above shows a pie chart, it shows just how much we have cut down our energy usage by adding just 8 smart plugs to our office. Now 300 kWh / 29% doesn’t sound like a lot but when you convert it into how much carbon we would save over an expected year, then we will prevent up to 48.6 kg of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. That’s a whole giant pacific octopus! This is just the impact of just one business taking action, imagine if everyone reading this took action, the change would be incredible, a lot of octopuses.
Hopefully our small example will influence the right minds, Like I said, our change is small, but our impact is big.
